What Are Plant Sterols and How Do They Work?
Plant sterols, also known as phytosterols, are one such ingredient. Widely recognized in human nutrition for helping reduce intestinal cholesterol absorption, they are now drawing growing interest in pet nutrition for their potential to support healthy lipid metabolism in dogs.1, 2
Advances in veterinary care, nutrition, and preventive health strategies mean dogs are living longer than ever, but that longer lifespan often comes with age-related concerns such as obesity and cardiometabolic disorders.
In dogs, hyperlipidemia refers to elevated blood cholesterol and/or triglyceride concentrations and has emerged as a clinically significant condition requiring a systematic diagnostic approach.3 It may be primary or secondary to conditions such as obesity, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, hyperadrenocorticism, and pancreatitis. These underlying conditions require veterinary diagnosis and management; nutrition can play a complementary role in supporting normal metabolic function.4
This mirrors the shift already seen in human nutrition, where consumers increasingly favor proactive wellness over waiting to address problems after they arise, and pet owners are applying the same philosophy to their animals, driving demand for ingredients that are both natural and scientifically substantiated.
Plant Sterols: A Proven Nutritional Ingredient
How Do Plant Sterols Support Cholesterol Metabolism?
Plant sterols are naturally occurring compounds found in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, legumes, and cereals. Structurally similar to cholesterol, they compete with it for incorporation into micelles, the structures cholesterol must join before it can be absorbed in the intestine, thereby reducing intestinal cholesterol absorption and promoting its excretion.2,4
This mechanism is well established in human nutrition. A 2023 systematic review and a 2024 meta-analysis, together drawing on dozens of randomized controlled trials, confirmed that phytosterol supplementation consistently reduces LDL cholesterol and increases HDL cholesterol in humans.5,6 This body of human evidence offers a reasonable starting point for exploring plant sterols in companion animal formulations, though canine-specific evidence is still limited and cannot yet confirm that dogs respond the same way.
What Does the Science Say in Dogs?
In a 2021 controlled trial, eight healthy Beagles received a 1,300 mg daily dose of phytosterols, split between their two regular meals, over 15 consecutive days. LDL cholesterol decreased significantly while HDL cholesterol increased, with no adverse effects observed.1 Because the study was conducted in healthy, non-dyslipidemic dogs over a relatively short period, it is best viewed as an early proof-of-concept rather than definitive clinical evidence. The authors nonetheless concluded that phytosterols may be a useful nutritional strategy for supporting healthy cholesterol metabolism in dogs, and called for larger, longer trials, including in dogs with clinically elevated lipid concentrations.1
These early findings are consistent with the much larger body of human evidence described above.5,6 Two recent narrative reviews, one on functional foods for canine health and one on plant-based ingredients and phytonutrients in canine nutrition, also discuss phytosterols as a compound of interest for lipid metabolism.2,4 It is worth being precise about what these reviews add: both draw primarily on the same 2021 canine trial rather than presenting new, independent canine data. Their value lies in situating phytosterols within the broader landscape of functional pet nutrition ingredients. At this stage, the canine-specific evidence itself still rests on that single trial.
Why Plant Sterols Fit Current Pet Nutrition Trends?
Pet humanization continues to reshape the category, with consumers seeking the same priorities in their pets’ diets that they value in their own: natural origin, scientific validation, and proactive wellness support, a shift reflected in a growing body of recent review literature on nutraceuticals for companion animal health.7 Plant sterols for dogs fit naturally within this trend, combining a long history of use in human nutrition, a well-understood mechanism of action, and an early, still-developing body of canine-specific research.1, 2, 4
Together, these attributes make them relevant for brands developing differentiated products around healthy aging, lipid metabolism, and broader metabolic wellness in dogs.

Plant sterols for dogs represent an emerging formulation opportunity for pet nutrition brands. For formulators, this is an opportunity to move beyond single-benefit positioning and build more complete wellness platforms grounded in both science and consumer relevance.
Conclusion: Supporting Evidence-Based in Plant Sterols for Dogs
With a well-established mechanism and a substantial evidence base in human nutrition,5, 6 an early but promising controlled trial in dogs,1 and supportive discussion in the canine nutrition review literature,2, 4 plant sterols represent a credible, early-stage ingredient for brands seeking to support healthy cholesterol metabolism, metabolic wellness, and healthy aging in dogs. As with any emerging ingredient, continued canine-specific research, ideally in larger cohorts and in dogs with clinically elevated lipid concentrations, will help build out that evidence base.
Plant sterols should be positioned as nutritional ingredients that support normal metabolic function and healthy cholesterol metabolism in dogs, not as ingredients that diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. Review any product-specific claims against applicable pet food, supplement, and veterinary regulations in the target market.
